Sino-Germany Sustainable Urbanization Seminar Held in Jining, Shandong

The 2017 Sino-Germany Sustainable Urbanization (Lake Ecological Restoration) Seminar was held in Jining, Shandong on October 26-27, 2017. The seminar was sponsored by the EU-China Municipal Development Commission in collaboration with the Municipal Government of Jining, and organized by the Jining National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone. Ms. Ingrid Jiang Standing Deputy Secretary-General of the EU-China Municipal Development Commission was present at the seminar and made a keynote speech at the opening session. Shi Guangliang, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee of Jining Municipality and Secretary of CPC Work Committee of Jining National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone is also present at the seminar. Liu Zhangjian, Deputy Secretary of CPC Work Committee of Jining National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone and Deputy Director of the Administration Commission of Jining National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone made a welcome speech on behalf of the host city.

The seminar gathered officials of Jining National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone as well as guests from related fields, including Dr. Jörg Freyhof, Chief Scientist at the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, Berlin, Christian Wolter, Scientist at the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, Dr. Bodo Weigert, Berlin Centre of Competence for Water, Jin Zhengyue, Software Development Engineer of German Sieker Engineering Co., Ltd., Mr. Qiu Haowei, Researcher at the GETIDOS Social-Ecological Platform. The event was coordinated by Li Zheng, Member of the CPC Work Committee and Consultant of the Administration Committee of Jining High-Tech Zone.


Nearly 50 experts, scholars and public officials from China and Germany shared opinions and conducted academic discussions on sustainable urbanization, fresh water urban lake management, Weishan Lake fresh water rehabilitation and ecological restoration and other topics at the seminar.


At the seminar, the German experts presented six specialized reports including "Conceptual Design and Modeling of Sponge City: Distributed Urban Rainwater Management" and "Impact of Urban Management Strategies Environment and Climate", while the Chinese experts presented "Introduction to Water Conservation Development in Jining City" and the "Study on Sustainable Development in Urbanization of Jining City. The two sides shared details of the solutions, concepts, methods and future study needs in water resources restoration in both countries, analyzed defects in certain ecological management systems of urban freshwater lakes through comparing the successful and failed cases, examined the use of decision support systems, methods, strategies, standards and criteria in design, building and deployment of restoration projects, and reached the conclusion for urban freshwater ecological system conservation and restoration nature-based solutions.

 

Venue of the Seminar


The seminar served as a platform for sharing of expertise, technical cooperation and exchange, work optimization and governance for scientists and governmental departments in both China and Germany. It is not only intended to strengthen international cooperation, promote ties and exchange, and introduce advanced management systems, and but also lay a foundation for later implementation of projects with funds from the German federal government in Jining. It made remarkable contribution to improvement of environment development in China’s urbanization, promotion of urban lake ecological restoration practices, and enhancement of the visibility of Shandong and Jining in the world.


Moreover, as an active measure of relevant departments of China and Germany for innovative development international governance practices, the seminar played a significant role in driving sustainable development of cities.


At the end of the event, Ms. Ingrid Jiang and Mr. Shi Guangliang shook hands and agreed that the two sides would work to have the second SINO-Germany Sustainable Urbanization (Lake Ecological Restoration) Seminar to be held in Jining City again the next year.
