On May 28th, Mr. ZHANG Yi headed the Delegation to visit the Headquarters of EU Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) in Alicante, Spain and met with Mr. Luis Berenguer, Head of Communication Service and Spokesman, Mr. Javier Moreno, Head of International Cooperation Service, Ms. Jacqueline Winkelmolen, Team Leader of International Cooperation Service and Ms. Carolina Pitarch, Project Manager of International Cooperation Service. Both parties held the meeting on the issue of jointly promoting the work of intellectual property protection as for the trademark and designs registry between Europe and China.

The Headquarters of OHIM

OHIM is the official department of EU, whose task is to promote and manage Community Trademarks and Community Designs within EU. It carries out registration procedures for titles to EU industrial property and keeps public registers of these titles. It shares with the courts in EU Member States the task of pronouncing judgment on requests for invalidation of registered titles. The current president is Mr. António Campinos.

Mr. Javier Moreno expressed his welcome to the visiting of the Delegation and he introduced the mission of OHIM. Then, Ms. Jacqueline Winkelmolen and Ms. Carolina Pitarch elaborated on the specific work of OHIM and the cooperation projects between OHIM and its counterpart in China. 

Mr. ZHANG Yi extended his gratitude to the warm reception from the officials of OHIM and he introduced the mission of the Commission and the purpose of this visiting. He pointed out that, since China has been playing more and more important role on the world economic stage, to protect IP and maintain the related legitimate interests has become the consensus for more and more Chinese enterprises and people. As the platform whose purpose is to facilitate the cooperation of various types between Europe and China, the Commission stands ready to work with OHIM to introduce the procedures of IP protection and management to China through the concrete projects with a view to enabling more and more Chinese enterprises and people to understand the procedures and benefit from them. 

Mr. Luis Berenguer appreciated the fact that the Commission attached great importance to IP and the related suggestions of the future cooperation offered by Mr. ZHANG Yi. He remarked, as the official department of EU, OHIM welcomed more and more institutions and persons who shared the common understanding to participate in the work of IP promotion and protection through the efficient methods. He said, OHIM welcomed the Commission to make its own contribution to the work of IP protection. 

Then, both parties reached the consensus on the concrete method of carrying out the efficient cooperation and the meeting concluded amid the friendly atmosphere.
