Chairman ZHANG Yi Meets with Mr. Carlos Moedas

On May 28th, 2017, Chairman ZHANG Yi met with Mr. Carlos Moedas, European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation at the Grand Opening of 2017 Horasis Global Meeting, which was held in Cascais, Portugal. Mr. ZHANG Yi and Mr. Carlos Moedas exchanged their views for the efforts of promoting Sino-European sci-tech innovation cooperation. Mr. ZHANG Yi introduced the current work of ECMDC and indicated his willingness of furthering the down-to-earth cooperation in the aspect of Sino-European sci-tech innovation under the guidance of Mr. Moedas in the capacity of European Commissioner. Mr. Moedas congratulated ECMDC on its related achievements, and stood ready to jointly promote more and more cooperation projects with mutual benefits at the level of EU Headquarters.

 

Mr. ZHANG Yi and Mr. Carlos Moedas

 

Mr. Carlos Moedas was born in Beja, Portugal on August, 1970 and is a banker and politician. Mr. Moedas studied Civil Engineering at the University of Lisbon and graduated in 1993. He spent his final year studying at Ecole des Ponts Paristech. From 1993 to 1998, Mr. Moedas worked at Suez Group, France. Later he studied at Harvard Business School and received MBA in 2000. He came back to Europe and joined in Goldman Sachs. Since 1995, Mr. Moedas was elected as Member of Parliament of Portugal, and became Under Secretary of State of the Portuguese Government in 2011. In 2014, on the recommendation of Portuguese Prime Minister and with the approval from Jean-Claude Juncker, President of European Commission, he assumes the post of European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation.

 

At the Grand Opening on May 28th, Mr. Carlos Moedas, European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation delivered the keynote speech as for the future sci-tech innovation of EU and the regional economic development. He elaborated on the related supports granted by EU Headquarters to the various sci-tech innovation projects. Mr. Moedas cited Portugal as an example to demonstrate the various changes sci-tech innovation has brought to Portugal. What Portugal has achieved is an inspiring case for other countries. Mr. Moedas also indicated that EU is quite open to work with partners from different countries to actively explore the innovation cooperation of all sorts.

 

After the speech, Mr. ZHANG Yi introduced to Mr. Carlos Moedas the efforts ECMDC has made of promoting the establishment of Chinese companies’ R & D centers in Europe. He also introduced the related successful cases. Mr. Moedas recognized the achievements ECMDC has made, and pointed out that, he expected more and more Chinese enterprises to establish R & D centers of different sorts in EU Member States. Through the joint efforts, the actual demands of China’s market and R & D capabilities of EU can be tightly integrated to actualize the win-win. Mr. ZHANG Yi remarked that, ECMDC will bring to the full play its platform function and advantages. While facilitating the Chinese high-quality companies to settle down in Europe, ECMDC will work with the concerned departments of EU to explore the innovation road to realize the coexistence of sci-tech innovation and Sino-European regional cooperation and development. Mr. Moedas said, EU will grant the sufficient support to the cooperation ECMDC is undertaking in line with the current policies.
